Cool Whale Stuff

Here's some cool whale stuff, with a smattering of stuff about other marine creatures for good measure

  • The Forgotten Aquariums of Boston - Not necessarily whale specific, but there's a ton of good information on early attempts at keeping beluga whales in captivity here. Also a great resource on early aquariums!
  • Killer Whales at Green Island Light House - A century old letter describing a white killer whale.
  • Oregon Sound News (ca. 1931) - A news report from 1931 about a killer whale who traveled up the Columbia River in Oregon. Warning for depiction of a dead animal.
  • KATU News Exploding Whale - That time a bunch of geniuses decided to get rid of a dead whale by blowing it up. A classic. Again, warning for dead animals.
  • The Blackfish Sounder Issues 1-25 - The Blackfish Sounder was a newsletter that ran from 1993 to 2017 and focused on killer whales in the Pacific Northwest. It was distributed to those who adopted a killer whale through the Vancouver Aquarium's adoption program, but you can read all the issues right here! Lots of good info and photos!
  • Nile - A page about a humpback whale I've been lucky enough to see in person!
  • Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums Literature - Again, not necessarily whale specific, but there is plenty of information on cetaceans kept in Japanese zoos and aquariums here.
  • Ku-chan Topics - A lot of information about and photos of Ku, a killer whale kept at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium.
  • North Atlantic Right Whale Catalogue - A catalogue of North Atlantic right whales, a critically endangered species, going back decades.
  • C.E. Wellings Collection - A collection of photos of the Australian and former whaling town of Eden from 1900 to 1948. Includes some photos of the "killers of Eden", a group of killer whales who cooperated with whalers in exchange for a share of the kill. Warning for images of dead animals.
  • Herbert Ponting Collection - A collection of photos taken by Herbert Ponting, a photographer for the Tera Nova Expedition in Antarctica. There's some great images of Antarctic killer whales here.
  • Guide to the New York Aquarium - A 1919 guide to the New York Aquarium! Lovely photos.
  • J27 Blackberry and J39 Mako - Quite possibly my favorite video ever I love these guys.
  • Delphinids on Display - A paper on the history of keeping cetaceans at Marineland of the Pacific.
  • Royal British Columbia Museum 1959 Report - Includes a paper on white killer whale sightings in the Pacific Northwest (with photos)!
  • Orca Spirit - An old website dedicated to orcas! Lots of pictures of now deceased captive orcas, and some links to other sites of the era dedicated to whales. Sadly portions of it were not preserved.
